The warp in weaving are the stable threads which allow the weft threads to interweave to create fabric. Doug Braun-Harvey's Six Principles of Sexual Health act as a stable foundation for sexual health conversations.
1. Consent
2. Non-Exploitation
3. Honest
4. Shared Values
5. Prevention from unwanted/unplanned pregnancy and STDs/Blood born infections
6. Pleasure
Each person presents to therapy, and sex therapy, with their own micro, macro, and mezzo culture. This cultural orientation influences life experiences and values related to sex, relationship, and treatment. Orienting to shared values related to sex within the therapeutic setting can help people grow into their own sexual health, values, and behaviors. This is not to say that they leave behind their long held beliefs, but rather allow their beliefs to grow in a way that honors their engagement with sexual pleasure and relationships.
